JANE'S WALK

JANE'S WALK

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs.

Join us here in East Harlem to walk and talk the murals of the Grandscale Mural Project, more than 100 pieces of public art that together create a vibrant gateway to Harlem on the three blocks adjacent to the Harlem-125th Street Metro-North station and busy Lexington Avenue 4/5/6 subway line.

Painted on more than half a mile of construction fencing by artists with ties to Harlem, Washington Heights and the Bronx, each mural was designed with the goal of supporting and uplifting passersby, and in turn has generated an outdoor art gallery that’s accessible to everyone. Get the story behind each piece and the politics behind using a construction fence as canvas. Plus meet up along the way with some of the amazing artists involved.

PUBLIC MEETING: EAST 125TH STREET EAST HARLEM

The East Harlem 125th Street BID Steering Committee, a group of businesses, property owners, residents, and elected officials, is proposing to create a new Business Improvement District (BID) along 125th Street between just east of Fifth Avenue to Second Avenue, south to 124th Street on some block faces and north to 128th Street on some block faces.

The BID would be the first for East Harlem, which is currently the only community district in Manhattan without one. A BID will help us make a positive impact on our community – addressing issues including cleanliness, beautification and public safety.

We’re hosting two public meetings for property owners and tenants who own a property, run a business or organization, or reside within the proposed BID district (marked green on the full map here). The information shared in each session will be the same, so you need to only join one:

Thursday, February 8, 6 p.m.

Tuesday, February 27, 10 a.m.

The Caribbean Cultural Center, 120 East 125th Street (Park/Lex)

The meeting will be in-person, with an online option. Register to attend here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdA8WDVLM4cxLv0P2rrH1Yz1W1AFqbvXuFZp6mhLBeo88R7hA/viewform

If you own property, run a business or organization, or reside within this district, you can help the effort by completing a statement of support: https://uptowngrandcentral.org/bid-formation.

GrowNYC Farmstands are part of a network of food access retail sites operated by GrowNYC. Through Farmstands, GrowNYC brings fresh, affordable vegetables, fruit, eggs and other products from its Northeast farm partners to underserved NYC neighborhoods.

Farmstands accept SNAP / EBT (food stamps), FNMP, Health Bucks, Greenmarket Bucks, Healthfirst OTC and Humana OTC, in addition to cash, debit and credit. If you’re using your SNAP / EBT, you can double your money because each $2 spent in SNAP / EBT earns you $2 in Health Bucks (up to $10).

HOT CHOCOLATE RIDES

Calling all chocolate fans: Hot Chocolate Rides are back for their third year running! We're teaming up again with our friends at El Barrio Bikes to host three weekends of bike tours that will have you sipping some of the best hot drinks across Harlem.

Ride leaders will share tips for riding during winter weather, all while rolling to some of our favorite neighborhood coffee shops. You'll brush up on how to gear up and be seen, keep the right tire pressure, and what to do if there's muck or ice.

Dates are Sundays, December 3, 10 and 17, from 10 a.m.-noon.
Register here. Are tickets sold out for the date you desire? Email info@uptowngrandcentral.org to be added to the waitlist.

No bike? No worry.
Let us know in advance and we can provide both helmets and bikes thanks to support from Citi Bike.
